The Zambia Institute of Mass Communication (ZAMCOM) Educational Trust is a training institute mandated to upgrade professional skills of journalists in both print and electronic media.

ZAMCOM's experience dates as far back as 1980 when it was established as a training department under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services to provide in-service training to working journalists. In 1996 it became an independent educational trust broadening its activities to communication-based programmes for non-media personnel, radio and television productions and research.

The institution has over the years established itself as one of the leading media training centers in East, Central and Southern Africa. The courses offered by the Institute range from two to six weeks and the newly introduced six months courses. The aims of ZAMCOM’s courses are to build capacity as well as responsible, professional and ethical journalism in Zambia. ZAMCOM has five main departments namely. Radio, Television, Print. Computer and Research, and Conferences.

About ZAMCOM

The Zambia Institute of Mass Communication is an independent professional media training trust in Zambia. The institute was initially the in – service training wing of the Ministry of Information and broadcasting when it was first established in the early 1980’s.


It has since then seen a lot of change and transformation where now it is mandated to offer professional media and communication training for audiences from within and outside Zambia. This mandate comes well stipulated through the ZAMCOM Act of 1996 in the parliament of the republic of Zambia.

Operations

The Institute has five major departments entrusted to carter for the needs of the media and communication industry. These departments include; The Television department, Radio department, Information Technology and Research (IT) department, Print Media department and the HIV/AIDS and Gender Media department. The institute further has an accounts department that takes care of all accounts and administrative matters. Each of these departments are run by a departmental manager that reports to the director who is also the chief executive of the institute.


The ZAMCOM Lodge

ZAMCOM has put in place a well furbished Lodge that offers accommodation and meals to trainees. ZAMCOM lodge is a beautiful place that offers a pleasant environment for training, comfort and relaxation. The lodge is continually being upgraded to make sure that the stay of our trainees or clients remains memorable and one to want to have again. 

It is strategically situated right in the heart of Lusaka within a walking distance from the city centre and Twenty Five (25) minutes drive from the Lusaka International Airport. It is located at the Conner of Church road and Andrew Mwenya road in the warm residential suburb of Rhodes Park.  Experience an unrivalled warm welcome upon entering this home away from home. The Lodge has excellent Conference facilities with a range of venues to cater for multi-day conferences of up to sixty (60) and a private dinner for up to forty (40) guests.
The Lodge boasts of Twenty (20) beautiful self contained rooms that are air conditioned and fitted with fridges and satellite Televisions showing both Local and International channels.
For your culinary desires, dine at our restaurant with exceptional buffets and international ala-carte menu; your breakfasts, lunches and dinners are deliciously catered for.
Guests can relax and unwind with a drink and warm snacks on the terrace, which provide a beautiful experience overlooking church road. The lodge has a professional team that is on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly and guarantees competitive rates with a touch of operational excellence.

ZAMCOM at a Glance 

 

ZAMCOM has over the years, undergone a number of changes from being entirely government controlled, to one   that is independent. The institute provides professional advice to journalists through programmes of instruction in issue based matters and refresher courses. This has earned the institution credibility and international recognition that is made manifest in the international programmes the institution is running. Interest from international partners is ever growing and ZAMCOM stands ready to embrace it and work well with its partners. Currently we have working relations with organizations such as the Institute for Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), the Nordic Southern African Journalism Training Institute (NSJ), the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) and the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) among others. ZAMCOM is also member of regional professional media bodies such as the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA), Southern African Media Trainers Network (SAMTRAN) and Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA).
ZAMCOM has a proven record for undertaking huge projects that have been successful and counted as some of the best in media and communication circles within the country and the Southern African region.
Among the regional and international clients and partners ZAMCOM has worked with in recent times are the Embassy of the United States Of America (USA) through the American Center, Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Thomas Foundation in the UK, the Knight Foundation in the US, UNESCO, UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO, Africa Information Afrique, the Southern Africa Research and Documentation Center (SARDC), the Southern Africa Media Development Fund (SAMDEF), the National Assembly of Zambia where members of parliament were trained in media relations among many others.
ZAMCOM has also provided media consultancy, production expertise and undertaken social marketing and awareness campaigns for a local and international portfolio of clients which includes Gender Links of South Africa, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Investigator General, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Society for Family Health and more recently, the Zambia Social Investment Fund (ZAMSIF) and the Development Corporation Ireland (DCI).
